Illustrating Compression: Light vs. Heavy

As mentioned in the opening paragraph of the last demonstration, sometimes it is necessary to overcompress or exaggerate compression by using drastic input parameters to illustrate the effect.  This demonstration serves to highlight the difference between how light compression sounds compared to how heavy compression sounds on the same input source.

As in previous examples, the goal is not to simply hear the volume reduction, but to hear the reduction in the difference between the quieter portions of the signal and the louder portions.  For guitar, listen for the difference between chord strikes and muted string strikes ("chuckkas")

Light Compression
Original Guitar - Sample Audio
00:00 / 00:00
Gentle Compression - Sample Audio
00:00 / 00:00

Compressor Parameters:

  • Threshold: -10dB

  • Ratio: 3

  • Attack: 0.03s

  • Release: .8s

Heavy Compression
Original Guitar - Sample Audio
00:00 / 00:00
Extreme Compression - Sample Audio
00:00 / 00:00

Compressor Parameters:

  • Threshold: -10dB

  • Ratio: 3

  • Attack: 0.03s

  • Release: .8s
